Computers can be annoying

My boot harddrive just failed, a great pain. No data was lost, I backup regularly and keep most important data on a different drive anyway. Note: I recommend the tool MozBackup, greatly simplifies copying browser details over for FireFox and Thunderbird.

Still, had the expense of a new drive that I could barely afford, and then the time to reinstall Windows, apply updates and re-install everything.

I did though pay the bit extra for a SSD drive, and have tried to configure to maximise drive life. There are a lot of sometimes contradictory suggestions for that, I have done the common ones.

Only just got Flash working again for the game though.

    1. I used linux for about a year after my old laptops OS corrupted. It was more hassle than most people would bother with, but at least it was free. Still, I like the layout of linux, but thats about it.

    2. There isn't much as annoying as the half a day I spent last year trying to use Linux, but people who push Linux whenever they hear someone had computer issues, even if it's hardware faults unrelated to the OS, comes close. People who use emoticons outside of text messaging services are also up there.

    3. I have no issues with Linux or Unix, I use Mac OS X a bit for work. I prefer Windows in general.

The issues I have had here would not of been much easier with Linux I still would of had to reinstall everything, but I suppose applying 200 Windows updates would not of been necessary.

Still, the software I use for the game is Windows based and no idea if say Wine would run it properly, so Windows seems best.

    4. Yeah linux magically fixes broken drives. *yes it's sarcasm*

    5. Because the game is in flash, it doesn't require wine to run on OSX. (Much appreciated that both this and spell are cross platform. I wish there was a cross platform RAGS replacement.)

  2. My understanding of ssd drives is they have a much longer life than originally feared. I work in enterprise IT and can attest that in our organization we see much longer life for ssd than traditional spinning plates with no special configuration.

    2. Though I do recommend waiting for the first firmware update before buying recently released drives, at least.

  3. SSD's have a harder time of failing, though the headache of switching can be such a pain in the butt that you would sometimes not bother with it, Building one into a computer, Easy. Switching? Annoying as heck.
    But it's definitely worth it.

  4. That's a pain, but at least it came with the silver lining of an upgrade to SSD!

  5. I think you were the first developer who saw who was smart enough to make a backup, HD failure is a major cause of death games.

  6. Ouch that sucks, at-least you didn't loose any thing. I hope all gos well from now on after all slave maker is one of my favorite games.

  7. Ouch! Sheesh, even though that hasn't happened to me, I can feel the pain. Like booting up a treasured game only for it to die upon loading into a save and the game can't load the immediate environs and then locking up when trying to leave for another zone or caught by a random battle. Damn I miss Digimon World 3.

I don't know how much individual pieces of comptech go for and I don't understand comptech much as I only learned how to use it rather than understand it but I do understand that is the primary memory cell for computers. While you were lucky to be that careful, its still an understandably scary blow (like above paragraph was to me ,-.-,).

This is called Bethesda Syndrome. As much as I like the games they make, their Gamebryo engine is notoriously unstable.

  8. SSDs are awesome. Optimizing can be a pain based on your windows version, but suggest: No prefetch/superfetch, indexing off, no defrag, no page file if you have enough RAM, TRIM if it's easy, AHCI if not running it already, no system restore points/shadow copies.

i still love how seamlessly fast mys system is with one though, and looking forward to having it for a lot of years :)

    1. I agree with most of that, but if you use start menu searches (and you should) indexing is a must have. Page files are really only used if you exceed memory, so if you have enough room its harmless. If you need it its there. And I would never go without system restore. What's a little disk space to avoid a possible reinstall?

    2. Running off of just RAM, my searches are almost seamless, whereas indexing seems to constantly run in the background if I have it on. YMMV depending on system, but mine isn't bleeding edge. Regarding system restore, I prefer to have all my backups on flash drives. I can reload windows/drivers and backed up files in about an hour if anything happens to my system, which last time went 2 years without any critical problems.

    3. The best way to optimize your SSD is: don't. Modern OSes are intelligent as to how they handle them.

  9. You update your Windows? thats probably what fucked your hdd, updates from windows are bad.

    1. The only bad updates from MS are the ones that break your Antivirus or the ones that attempt to force a new OS onto your system.

  10. That's troublesome. Personally I find a good external harddrive that I manually back up to once in awhile the most reliable. And Google drive for small files. *shrug*

  11. Did that since I got a computer virus that destoryed my computer's drive. I mean the hardware, not just the software.

  12. Flash is dying out . Better start getting used to HTML5

    1. Cmac is already making a game in html, he picked up this great old game, a spell for all. Also, you saying flash is dying, is like saying guild wars 2 would be the wow killer. I love guild wars 2 but the only thing that can kill wow, is wow.

      Delete
    2. WoW started killing itself more or less when Cataclysm came out.
Telling Cmac to get used to HTML5 is like telling Fenoxo to get used to it. He won't need to unless Flash stops being developed after AS3 and the game needs another overhaul.

  13. I am not sure if it is Windows 10 or adobe flash but now every few clicks in the game it seems to lock up. Takes place on the main desktop or a virtual desktop.

    2. I made a booboo. I'm running it through Windows 7 x64 and the only problem I have is load time (for which the only fix is to remove all traces of the slaves, minor slaves and assistant you don't want). So I guess it's Sindows 10. As soon as I noticed MS was trying to force it up my arse I knew I didn't want it.
Sometimes the game will lock for a second while it displays the little box requesting memory space. That's the only holdup I experience.

    3. The monory prompt is a standard Flash thing, you need to check the global flash settings and check that you have set the available storage for flash local storage in high enough, 10Mb or unlimited I would suggest

  14. I didnt read the comments, but I hope that you did switch your bios's sata mode to AHCI before you installed your os on your new ssd. SSDs are great, but they can be a pain to get running at first if you've never fooled with em. You should also check and make sure TRIM is working properly, a free program called crystal disk info can help you see that... there are other technical ways to do it that i dont remember. Anyway, glad you're back on the case!

  15. I do not know anybody who likes windows 10 and most new hardware manufacturers are beginning to make XP and Linux drivers. I do know a lot of people are switching Debian over Ubuntu and Python over C++, mostly because of the New Raspberry Pi B+. hmmm. Still Ubuntu has more drivers like what you can get at x.org..

  16. Hello, all.

I just had one of my 16GB thumb drives take a dump on Me. Whereas that might not seem to be a major issue, it had around 90% of My SM3 works-in-progress and expansion files on it. :-(

That includes virtually ALL of my Lina Inverse stuff, and the entire Holo pic archive that I had built up.

WTF does "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" mean, and how do I fix the @%#$ thing? If anyone here can help, I would appreciate it immensely.

    Thx.
