I am not a fan of Windows 10

I was just doing some work on the game again, just hunting for bugs and small tweaks and Windows crashed on me a few times.

Since I upgraded to Windows 10 I keep seeing Explorer crashing a lot, and a lot of things just run poorly in comparison to my previous Windows 7 installation.

Admittedly my computer is quite old, still a 32 bit system with only 2Gb usable memory. I have a laptop of similar nature, running Vista (I am going to have to upgrade that soon as it is nearing it's end of life) When I can afford it I will have to get a new desktop system, when I can afford it.

But still Windows 10 seems more optimised to be used on a handheld/tablet or with a touch screen and is a pain at times to use. Still, enough complaining, it is the current Windows, and I am a computer professional so I use it to gain knowledge and experience, but I do not like it!

As an aside, still got a damned cold, but the temperatures have passed and just feeling run down and coughing a bit. Apparently the strain going around in my local area is a particularly long lasting one, not as sever as many, just hangs around a lot. But I am a diabetic and these things hit me a bit harder.

  1. Take care of your health, grab as much time as you need to recover...Why don't you open a donation account, not for this game only but for your overall work, I don't think it's illegal I know you don't want to have copyright issues, but you can simply avoid that by not using the title of the game as an advertisement, you may instead advertise your "writing" skills and stuff like that..In short, open the account as a writer not as a game maker, or you can go fully legal by sharing a bit of the income with the original artists (or if that's impossible, renew the artwork just like other Devs have done) hThis could take years but I'm sure it will be worth it, it may even give you the chance to have a full time job doing all this.

  2. Maybe its time to seriously consider switching to Linux. I have. Unlike Windows 10, it doesn't beam all of your personal information back to Micro$oft and the NSA.

  4. personally, i've enjoyed using windows 10. i recently switched to ubuntu @ work and am really missing the easy tiling of windows 10.

yes, there are some pretty good tiling window managers for linux as well, but none are as easy to use with a mouse/keyboard combination as the default windows 10 behavior.

furthermore the quick reboot times from windows 7 to windows 10 were a very welcome change... though it got even quicker with ubuntu for me :)

i'm still using windows 10 at home though and aren't planning on switching anytime soon.

anyway, i'm commenting because you might want to know that there seems to be a problem with the 'full-version' torrent for SlaveMancer 3.5

i tried several clients (qbittorrent, jstorrent, ..) and all of them crashed as soon as i clicked 'add torrent' -- until i got it working with transmission (which btw can only be downloaded from the file server. there are no links on the homepage)

also, there seem to be some people waiting on the magnet link for a seed to pop up, as the torrent isn't being shared for some reason.

    1. I am seeding the torrent, and I see 64 other seeds currently.

I use Vuze and have no issues. I have heard issues for some clients unable to handle the large number of individual files in the game torrent.

  5. I reluctantly went to Windows 10 Professional for my new gaming machine (I got it in January) and it's not bad. It doesn't fill me with instant rage like Windows 8.x did anyway.

I still run Windows 7 Ultimate on my other machines.

There are some third party products (from Stardock and others) to make the UI more like Windows 7.

You should at least try to jump to Windows 7 x64 before it's no longer available. (x86 is dying a quick death now.)

    1. That's SO helpful. Now feck off.
A lot of Linux builds suck worse ass than Windows. Granted nothing sucks more mightily than ME, Vista and 10.
ME (Millennium Edition froze constantly - basically trying to run 98SE on NTFS), Vista was slow as a sloth taking a shite and 10 is an unproven, much detested mess of things that only has the selling point of Free(for a limited time, essentially forcing the uninformed to buy it) and a new KI game.

MS, fix yourselves before breaking the law again.

  9. Lol, you don't need to use win10 just because you are a "computer professional". You are supposed to have your own views and make your own choice without following blilndingly the masses... !

Upgrading with only 2G of ram was obviously a bad idea, without even talking of all the spyware inside... Well you can always downgrade, or try linux !

    1. I use Windows 7 / xubunutu 16.04 in a dual boot installation. I almost never use windows. One reason is that ubuntu with fxce (xubuntu) star very quickly on my old deskstop and instantly and my new laptop (hp spectre). You should have a try. My nephew is a professsionnal and use linux at work.

    2. I used Xubuntu for a quite a while, but for myself, I kept running into issues with the fact that it uses a lot of older packages, or packages I wanted just weren't available, even via PPA. I tried Arch for a while, but it breaks, a lot, and I got sick of that after a year. Now I use Manjaro. Its like Arch, minus the breakage. Most anything you want is available via AUR, and always the latest versions of everything.

  10. The 2GB of ram really pushes it on Windows 7, 8 and 10. I found a clean install of windows 10 fixed a few things but went back to windows 7.

If you can I would see if you can get more ram or downgrade.

    ReplyDelete
  11. As much as I would like to have an excuse to bash Windows 10, I'm pretty sure the reason why you're crashing is because you only have 2 GB of ram. All the fancy GUI elements and flairs and whatnot in Windows 10 takes up a ton of resources, especially for a weak computer. Still on Windows 7 here.

  12. building your own pc can be a lot cheaper. the operating system is up to you but i can give you a roadmap of sorts for the parts but you will have to find a video on how to assemble it.
    A-Series CPUs are cost effective
and motherboards for those chips arent very pricey
if you reuse your hard drive, case, and power supply you can save a lot and spend a minumum of 120 bucks. I had a quick look at some components and these seemed to be the most cost effective:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138415&ignorebbr=1
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113371&ignorebbr=1
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148540
this(^) i chose because it was compatible with the board and it was 8 gigs instead of 2 so yea... if you do include the memory it only goes up to 150.
im just saying cuz all everyone else is talking about is the OS.

  15. Building your own computer can be fun. I have found Microcenter's pricing overall consistently less than either Tiger or Newegg. Please setup a R&D
account with Paypal so that the members of the SM community can contribute to the equipment costs that keep our game expanding. A top line I7 chip with a good motherboard, a 660gtx ti video card, 32 gigs of ram and a 2 terabyte hard drive should work well for you. Give our community a chance.
Remember as slavers we may not believe in charity buy we are willing to pay for our needs. Thank you, and if you need any help please let me know.

Core i5-3550, Nvidia GTX660 OC (3GB GDDR5), 16GB DDR3-1666, 250GB Boot SSD, 2TB Storage SSHD. It runs everything without problems aside from Bethesda games. But they're crashfests anyway, so that doesn't count.

Don't make it mandatory, and don't ask for absurd amounts but we should be able to fund a new computer by the time your old one dies.

    1. That's currently not possible due to copyright concerns from all the different characters and images in the game. The instant there's income from the game it's a situation ripe for legal trouble.

    2. You could just set up an account for a new computer. Not for the game itself. No problems if you are not funding the game.

    3. There are hundreds of translators for games, anime, manga, and web novels making money off of 'donations' to do what they do.

It isn't illegal anywhere in the world to receive donations.

Or to post pictures you don't own, and write words about them.

Because it's donations, and not a subscription, it isn't funding SM so it doesn't in any way infringe on any laws aside from the ones the stupid americans almost passed, the SOPA and PIPA stuff.

Side note: Does anyone know how to actually change houses besides cheating? It eats up my gold but I get no return from it.

I don't want to cheat as I've gone so far without cheating, almost half the slaves and assistants all in love with me, with at least one kid, and everyone I've trained has at least 90 in every stat.

Is it impossible for me to do a perfect non-cheating game? Is there no way to change from the mansion to the brothel? I only picked the mansion for the maid, but I seriously hate it!

    1. Also don't forget that older applications generally don't work too well on newer hardware.

Try running Might & Magic VI (CD version) on a newer system. It won't work without knowing there are updates out there.

  21. if you updated to windows 10 today you have roughly 29 days left to switch back to your old OS for free after that you will have to dump everything and reboot it from scratch uploading your old OS onto the system. if you want to get back to your old system go into settings, click on update & security, now click on recovery and then there will be something that says go ba to the old system. I cant remember what it says because I have had windows 10 since it came out and I cant go back.

  28. @Cmacleod your computer is aboslutely underpowered to run Windows 10, hence the amount of issues your having with it.
To run Average you need 8gb of Ram as well as an i5 processor or a AMD equivalent, not that I would use AMD cause it does have incompatibilities with certain programs.
If you are getting a new PC or at least planning for one, Put your money towards a Skylake Processor which is the new batch of i5's and i7's from intel as they have much better performance and tend to work well with Windows 10 and if there isn't too much of a price difference also get one that has DDR4 as that will give more improvements for your system.

That being said for my own personal system, fuck Win10 I have no intention of changing from Win 7 until I need to replace my motherboard, optimisations be damned I'm going to use a OS that is more stable.

    4. It's basically a Optimisation of the Ram pretty much and just overall improvement of the hardware functioning with the OS. I won't lie that it is there, but the instability issues just make it undesirable to fully switch too, I would always want to use Win 7 for my personal computer.

  33. If you are still having issues with Windows 10 I can recommend one possible solution, and I mean not 100% the fix.

Open the start menu and type "cmd," right click the choice that comes up and click "Run as administrator." In the black window that opens type "sfc /scannow" and let it do its thing.

Upgrading to Windows 10 is known to crack the OS sometimes and the scan looks for anything broken in the system files. Naturally I agree with getting a new machine but this might make it work a little better till then.

    2. The only way Cmac could avoid the copyright issue is to separate the game into two parts. Engine and Content. Patreon the Engine and give away the Content. A single original character could be included in the Engine to keep it functional. But that would require refactoring the codebase, and he's already too busy just updating it.

Keep in mind that Cmac may not actually want to make money off of this. Copyright is an easy excuse to avoid the issue entirely.
